CANARY ISLANDS

We spent one week in December 2004 on Gran Canaria in the Canary
Islands. The Canaries are part of Spain and they sit off the coast of
Morocco. We stayed with our close friend, Juan, in the residential area
of El Tablero. This enabled us to see the island both as tourists but
also with a glimpse into “real life” on the island, away from the big
hotels and resorts. As you can see Gran Canaria offers the visitor a
wide range of possibilities to enjoy nature-beautiful places such as
small picturesque villages, steep mountain sights, outstanding valleys
and of course, sunrises and sunsets at gorgeous beaches. The people
are innately hospitable and friendly and the typical Canarian kitchen
makes every single meal an unforgettable experience. This was my first
visit to The Canaries but Jürgen has been there many times.

 in the
fishing village of Agaete was a rock formation that is famous on Gran Canaria.
This past fall, a tropical storm hit this side of the island and
destroyed the formation. This was a terrible loss for the very
religious people of the Canaries. We are grateful to have seen it and
been able to capture it in a photograph before it vanished into the sea.</p>'))
